Anti-war protestors are celebrating a Court of Appeal ruling which held that the police acted unlawfully in detaining them for 2½ hours without arrests. The Court of Appeal ruled that police violated the Human Rights Act when they illegally detained 120 protestors en route to a demonstration at RAF Fairford, Gloucestershire. Giving judgment, Lord Chief Justice Lord Woolf stated that, 'the passengers were virtually prisoners on the coaches for the length of the journey…[W]e are not persuaded that there were no less intrusive possible alternative courses of action here".more...

Write to the detainees in Britain's Guantanama Bay
12 foreign citizens are being detained indefinitely as "terrorist suspects" under the Anti-Terrorism Crime and Security Act 2001. They haven't been charged with any offence and they will not be tried. They have never even been questioned by police. The names of most of the men are secret. They have been held in jail under high-security conditions in cells best described as "concrete coffins". These conditions, combined with the hopelessness and uncertainty of their situation, place the men under intolerable psychological pressure. Several detainees have attempted suicide. To date, four of them have been moved from Belmarsh Prison - one to house arrest and three to Broadmoor Psychiatric Hospital - following the collapse of their mental health. more...

For the past year, four Belgian organisations (the ‘bankwatch organisation’ Netwerk Vlaanderen and the peace movements Forum voor Vredesactie, Vrede and For Mother Earth) have been running the campaign ‘My Money. Clear Conscience?’. This campaign denounced the fact that banks are using their clients’ money to invest in the weapon industry. During that year of campaigning, two reports were released. These reports show the investments in (controversial) weapon systems by the 5 most prominent international bank groups in Belgium. These reports caused a lot of commotion within the Belgian public, press and financial sector. At this moment, the campaign has already reached some very important and concrete results and we expect some new positive evolutions in the near future. more...
