In 1958 Gerald Holtom created a logo for the first march for Nuclear Disarmament from London to Aldermaston.

He combined the semaphore signals for N and D  
         
to make ND He then enclosed
this in a circle
to form
 


This symbol first became famous as the logo of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND).

It was later widely adopted around the world as a symbol of peace.
